Vaikuttavista live-esiintymisistä tunnettu The Smashing Pumpkins on yksi vaihtoehtorockin suurimmista nimistä. Se on muokannut koko genren ilmettä ja äänimaailmaa jo yli kolme vuosikymmentä. Vuonna 1988 Chicagossa perustettu yhtye on myynyt yli 30 miljoonaa albumia ja saanut lukuisia tunnustuksia, mukaan lukien kaksi Grammy-palkintoa ja seitsemän MTV Video Music Awards -voittoa. Bändin katalogiin kuuluvat sellaiset klassikkolevyt kuin Siamese Dream (1993), Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) ja Adore (1998), jotka kaikki ovat jättäneet pysyvän jäljen rockmusiikkiin.
